The Google Earth Project
Jefferson County, Missouri
The Google Earth Project is not meant as a replacement, but rather a companion to the available historical Atlases of Jefferson County, Missouri. Hard copies of the 1876 and 1898 Atlas are available through the Jefferson County Historical Society.

In Google Earth, an overlay is an image superimposed upon a satellite render of the Earth's surface. Manipulating the Google Earth software allows the user the create an overlay, and change its transparency of the overlay such that both the overlay and the satellite render can be seen at one time. In this case this creates a unique look at how Jefferson County has changed since 1898. To utilize the Jefferson County Overlays in Google Earth follow these steps:

  1. Download the Google Earth File of your choice and save it to your computer
  2. Open the Google Earth software, choose 'File,' 'Open,' and open the 'JeffersonCounty1876.kmz' or the 'JeffersonCounty1898.kmz' file from the saved location

Each portion of the Jefferson County overlay is downloaded into Google Earth. Using the mouse, the user can zoom in and zoom out, as well as change the transparency level using the sliding bar just below the 'Places' window.

The main goal of this project is to allow those interested in Jefferson County history access to this wonderful resource--beginners and experts alike. Among Jefferson County's rich history, there are still stories left untold and undocumented. May this contribution spur a continued interest in Jefferson County's profound history.
